Are There Alternatives to a Dental Crown?

Crowns are utilised in dentistry when a significant portion of the tooth has become damaged or decayed and can to be saved. A crown offers a close match with the teeth’s natural aesthetic, whilst offering strength and durability when performing basic functions like chewing.

Alternatives when there is still enough tooth structure

If there is still enough tooth structure to support a restoration, there are a couple of options that can be explored instead of a crown.

Dental Fillings

The first option is a dental filling, whilst this isn’t ideal when there’s less structure of the tooth, this option can be performed in just one appointment and can instantly restore function to the mouth. In most cases, composite bonding is used to create a seamless blend between the filling and the natural tooth.

Onlays

Onlays are an essential restoration technique. Onlays are made up of ceramic, which is milled in a laboratory. This precision delivers exceptional dental prosthetics that fit comfortably and seamlessly blend into the surrounding tissue alongside the natural teeth.

Onlays are fantastic for fixing teeth which have had the surface damaged, typically including the cusps. Cusps are the pointy ridges on the top of our teeth, which help us to chew, shred and break down food as we eat. A typical onlay can replace these, bringing strength and durability back to the teeth. A partial onlay performs the same but is used when less tooth structure is damaged.

Often preferred because they are long-lasting, have a natural appearance and can be used to repair severely damaged teeth.

Extraction

Unfortunately, some teeth cannot be saved, and for patients uncertain about getting a crown, they may prefer to just remove the tooth altogether. Extraction can be the most straightforward of approaches, as the area will need to be numbed before the tooth is pulled out by the dentist.

Patients opting for extraction may then go on to consider treatments for replacing teeth, like a Maryland Bridge or an implant.
