What is oil pulling?
Oil pulling is a method used to clean the mouth. The process involves taking some sort of plant-based oils, like a sesame or coconut oil. The oil is swilled around the mouth, being sucked between the teeth, similarly to how we rinse our mouths with mouthwash.
Why do people do oil pulling?
It’s theorised that oil pulling can help to clean the mouth by removing bacteria and plaque with oil. Some claims even suggest oil pulling can brighten the teeth, giving the illusion of the teeth being whitened, whilst other claims include:
- Treat and prevent tooth decay
- Healing properties
- Treat gum disease symptoms like bleeding
- Rid a bad breath
Why should oil pulling be avoided?
Oil pulling is not a backed practice; with limited research into the method, it’s best to avoid using it altogether. Due to the claims not being confirmed or backed by science-based evidence, it’s important to avoid using product that aren’t designed with oral hygiene in mind.
Is oil pulling dangerous?
Whilst there are no serious dangers associated with oil pulling, there is a link to oil consumption and digestive issues. It’s best to avoid oil pulling as it is not as effective as dental products which have been created under regulation.
Hygiene practices you can adopt which are safe for the mouth
It’s advised that people use regulated hygiene products to maintain their oral health, using mouthwashes, toothpastes, dental tapes and flossers to effectively clean the teeth.
Flossers – There are various flossers you can use to effectively clean between the teeth and the gum line. Take water flossers, for instance, they utilise pressurised water to remove and build up. Water flossers allow for precise cleaning without the need to fiddle with a string of floss.
Interdental brushes are equally effective for cleaning the gums and teeth. They can be bought in multiple sizes and can be twisted to accommodate the contours of the teeth, both of which allow for a more tailored cleaning routine.
Plaque-revealing tablets – This product uses a dye to help you identify areas where plaque has not been properly removed. Disclosing tablets are particularly useful for learning how to precisely clean the teeth. This is a worthwhile product for those with orthodontic treatment, as it can really help perfect the process of cleaning around the brace.
Mouthwash – There’s a vast amount of mouthwash products available, all of which address unique dental issues. For those with gum disease, it may even be possible to be prescribed a mouthwash designed to remedy symptoms.
It’s important we avoid overcomplicating our oral hygiene routine; sticking to the basic products like a floss and toothpaste is an effective way to maintain our dental health.
