Wimpole Street Dental Clinic is proud to share that Prof Dr Christian Mehl has returned to the Christian-Albrechts-University at Kiel to lead a series of lectures in implantology for the university’s dental students.
It is a role he has held alongside his clinical work in London for many years. Appointed a professor at Kiel in recognition of his scientific contribution, Prof Mehl continues to split his time between treating patients at Wimpole Street and helping to train the dentists who will follow him into the profession.
Passing on more than two decades of implant expertise
Prof Mehl is a specialist in prosthodontics and dental implant surgery, with more than 25 years in dentistry and over 70 peer-reviewed papers to his name. His research into implant systems has been recognised with the Camlog Research Award, and he remains actively involved in the development of new implant designs and techniques.
That blend of clinical and scientific experience is exactly what makes his teaching at Kiel so valuable. Rather than presenting implantology as a fixed set of steps, he grounds every session in the evidence behind it, helping students understand not just how a technique works but why it is the right choice for a particular patient.
What the students covered
This year’s lectures focused on the principles of modern implant dentistry, from initial diagnosis and treatment planning through to the surgical and prosthetic phases of care. Students explored how to assess a case, when implants are the most appropriate solution, and how the surgical and restorative elements come together to deliver a result that is both functional and natural-looking.
Throughout, the emphasis was on clinical and scientific evidence. For dentists at the start of their careers, learning to weigh the research behind each decision is as important as mastering the practical skills, and it is a habit Prof Mehl is keen to instil early.
Why teaching matters to the clinic
Teaching is not a sideline at Wimpole Street Dental Clinic. It reflects how the practice approaches dentistry as a whole: led by evidence, committed to continuous learning, and focused on raising standards across the profession rather than within a single clinic.
Staying close to the next generation of dentists also keeps the team sharp. The questions students ask, and the fresh thinking they bring, feed directly back into the way care is delivered to patients in London. Reflecting on the experience, Prof Dr Mehl said:
“Teaching implantology to students at Kiel is one of the most rewarding parts of my work. These are the dentists who will care for patients long after I have stepped away from the chair, and I see real responsibility in giving them the strongest possible foundation. When you teach, you are forced to question your own thinking and stay current, so the benefit runs both ways. Passing on what I have learned, and learning from a new generation in return, is a privilege I never take for granted.”
Prof Mehl’s continued work at Kiel sits alongside a busy programme of lectures, research and clinical practice, all of which inform the care offered at Wimpole Street Dental Clinic. It is a reminder that the best dentistry is never standing still, and that today’s teaching shapes tomorrow’s standard of care.
