A significant and emotional milestone was reached recently with the retirement of Prof Dr Matthias Kern, who has served as Chair of the Department of Prosthodontics, Propaedeutics, and Dental Materials at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel for 27 years. His extensive contributions to the fields of prosthodontics and dental materials have had a profound impact, both in academic circles and in clinical practice, shaping the future of dental care and education.
Prof Dr Christian Mehl, who spent many years working under Prof Kern’s guidance, reflects on the pivotal role his former mentor played in his professional development:
“I was fortunate to be a small part of his long journey, first as a student, then as an assistant professor, PhD student and finally an extraordinary professor and researcher at his department. I am very grateful for all the support and hours of feedback I have received which allowed me to be where I am today.”
The Schleswig-Holstein Dental Society paid tribute to Prof Kern’s legacy with a series of lectures delivered by his former PhD students. These presentations highlighted the immense influence he had on his students’ professional lives and on the field of dentistry at large. The event brought together former colleagues and friends, many of whom now continue to carry forward the lessons and innovations they learned under Prof Kern’s mentorship, advancing dental care and research in his name.
Prof Kern’s retirement marks the end of an era, but his influence will be felt for years to come. His contributions to prosthodontics and his dedication to nurturing future generations of dental professionals will leave an enduring legacy, not only at the University of Kiel but also in the global dental community.
From all of us here at Wimpole Street Dental Clinic, we wish Prof Dr Kern the very best in retirement.
