Saving Teeth

The number one job of a dentist is to ensure his patients maintain a healthy dentition and therefore to prevent serious tooth damage. Often we see the patients when it’s already too late – in these cases, we should still do everything possible, within reason, to recover them. See here the different stages of saving teeth.

Teeth Whitening

It all starts here! Cleaned teeth result in superb gum health, no bleeding and fresh
breath. Having regular hygiene sessions helps all patients to achieve this goal.
It also ensure that any dental work you’ve had is surrounded by healthy tissues – this will certainly prolong its life.

Once we’re sure that the decay has reached the dentine, it’s time to intervene.
Careful decay removal, perfect surface cleaning and well well-isolated environment
will ensure our small composite fillings could last for 20 years.

These are needed when the decay is very extensive or when we need to replace a
defective old filling. Large composite fillings don’t last as long as small ones, but they can still function well for 10 years, if adequately done.

Removing amalgam fillings must be done with perfect isolation thanks to a rubber
dam, avoiding contaminating the patient with the debris. Composite can be a
decent replacement, however, in some cases we recommend ceramic as the new restorative material.

When the pulp becomes exposed to bacteria, due to decay or cracks, we have
to consider this treatment, to disinfect the inside of the roots and therefore keep the tooth in your mouth. This therapy requires exquisite skills, microscope and a conservative mindset.

Also called overlays, these are ceramic restorations that cover all the chewing
surface of a tooth. They have a very high success rate, potentially lasting for
decades, when there is still enough enamel left, and if done properly.

Crowns are useful when the tooth has been too destroyed to either have a simple
filling or an overlay. They are also more aesthetic than overlays, so this is also a
good reason to choose this solution. Often after a root canal treatment, a crown is required for stability.

People protect their phones, why not protect their teeth? Most serious tooth
wear and catastrophic fractures occur due to grinding or clenching (bruxism). If your dentist suspects that you are overloading your teeth, a night guard can extend the lifespan of both teeth and restorations.
