Achieve a brighter, more confident smile with Professional Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a great treatment in the field of cosmetic dentistry. It uses a gentle bleaching agent, typically containing a mild concentration of hydrogen peroxide, to substantially lighten the teeth. It is often the easiest and more effective way to improve the appearance of your smile. This popular procedure is ideal for almost all patients who want to enhance the look of their teeth, reducing their yellowness and rejuvenating the smile.

The most effective type of teeth whitening is typically with take-home trays custom made by your dentist. It has the downside of taking about 2 weeks in average to reach excellent results. With in-office, chair side whitening, the results may be immediate, but usually they’re not so good and are prone to relapse. Still, it is an great way to improve the shade of the teeth for those who are in a hurry.

How does Teeth Whitening work?

The bleaching agent used in tooth comes in the form of a gel, which sits on top of the teeth for a prolonged amount of time, kept in place by a whitening tray. The whitening agent penetrates the enamel (the outer layer of the tooth) to reach the discoloured molecules within the dentin (the inner layer) and releases oxygen molecules. These react with the discoloured molecules of the tooth breaking the bonds that hold together stains from food, beverages, tobacco, and age. This chemical reaction helps to disperse the pigments and lift the color of the tooth, making it appear whiter.

This process is extremely safe for the tooth structure, as it doesn’t remove any part of the tooth’s surface but rather targets the colour-causing molecules, offering a whiter appearance without altering tooth composition.

Essentials of Teeth Whitening

Whilst whitening is highly effective on most teeth, one needs to ensure that:

Your teeth and gums are healthy. Performing whitening on inflamed or diseased gums can lead to the exacerbation of the problem. Whilst we are experts in cosmetic dentistry, your oral health is always our number one priority.
You are the right candidate. Some people have intrinsic deep discolourations, sometimes related to having taken antibiotics as a child, which will not respond to teeth whitening.
Your teeth don’t have excessive wear. Teeth whitening would still work relatively on worn down teeth, but the results won’t be extraordinary. If your teeth have suffered from excessive tooth wear, speak to your dentist as there are many conservative solutions to reconstruct them.
If you have front teeth with restorations on, such as fillings, veneers or crowns, these will not get whiter. Therefore, they may have to be replaced after teeth whitening.
Whitening is not recommended to those who are pregnant or nursing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes, as the NHS confirms. However, it should be prepared and supervised by a dentist or dental hygienist. We have decades of observation and can assure you that it does not harm the teeth at all. It can however cause some damage on the gums if the wrong concentrations of whitening gels or wrong techniques are used.

Professional teeth whitening treatments performed by a dentist in clinic or conducted at home under a dentist’s supervision, can brighten teeth by between two to three shades with the bleaching effect lasting for several years. Ask our team to show you some of our patient’s recent teeth whitening results.

We would suggest that on average, the bleaching effect which results from your teeth whitening treatment lasts for several years. It will gradually fade away, so it is not considered permanent. The duration that your teeth stay the shade you have achieved depends on your diet and your oral hygiene regime post-treatment. Your newly whitened teeth are susceptible to the discolouration some foods and drink can cause over time – for example, red wine, tea, coffee, cola.
