Does bleaching really harm your teeth? Here is how it works
In this video, Dr. Christian Mehl explains how dental whitening works and how it can help brighten your smile.
Is Teeth Whitening Safe? One of the most common questions we get is whether teeth whitening is damaging to enamel. After 20 years of scientific research, we can confidently say that teeth whitening is safe and does not damage the structure of your teeth. However, it is essential to protect the soft tissue during the procedure to avoid any potential burns.
How Does Teeth Whitening Work? The procedure begins with covering the soft tissues and isolating the teeth. A gel containing hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide is applied to the teeth. The gel is activated by light or heat, and the process typically lasts between 8 to 15 minutes, repeated two to four times. The results are visible immediately after the procedure, but your teeth may darken slightly over the next 5 to 10 days as the teeth rehydrate.
How Long Do the Results Last? Teeth whitening can last anywhere from 1.5 to 4 years, depending on your lifestyle and dietary habits. The more you smoke or consume staining foods and beverages, the quicker your teeth may discolor again. Teeth whitening is a safe and effective procedure that can give you a brighter smile that lasts for up to 3 years, depending on your habits.
