How does one achieve specialist status?
Achieving specialist status in orthodontics in the UK is a rigorous and competitive process. It begins with obtaining a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree, followed by passing the Membership Exam of the Royal College of Surgeons (M Orth). After this, a dentist must complete a two-year residency program, involving both academic and clinical training in orthodontics. Finally, passing the British College of Health Dentistry (BCHD) exam qualifies a dentist as an orthodontist.
Specialist orthodontists undergo further dedicated training, typically three years, focusing on treating irregularities of the teeth and jaws, primarily through various braces and orthodontic appliances. This training culminates in achieving a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training and being registered as a specialist orthodontist with the General Dental Council (BLOS, Moorpark Orthodontics).
