We are thrilled to share some exciting news from the corridors of Wimpole Street Dental Clinic – our very own Dr. Raul Costa has recently had his scholarly paper published in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Esthetic Dentistry – Winter 2023 edition. The publication of Dr Costa’s paper, titled “Clinical guidelines for posterior restorations based on Coverage, Adhesion, Resistance, Esthetics, and Subgingival management” (the CARES concept), marks a significant milestone in his already distinguished career and stands as a testament to the depth of knowledge and expertise we pride ourselves on at our clinic.
The paper is part of a three-article series, with this latest publication focusing on the clinical decisions for full-contour resistive crowns. It delves into the various aspects of restoring posterior teeth, which has been a topic of considerable discussion in the dental field. As a co-authour, Dr Costa, along with his other co-authors, laid out a comprehensive framework for dental professionals to navigate the complexities of restorative dentistry, particularly when it comes to choices between adhesive restorations like onlays, overlays, and endocrowns, or resistance form restorations such as full-contour resistive crowns.
In this paper, Dr Costa presents the CARES concept, which outlines the decision-making process for restorative methods based on key factors: Coverage, Adhesion, Resistance, Esthetics, and Subgingival management. This thoughtful approach aids in determining the best course of action considering the extent of tissue loss, the remaining tooth structure, material choice, preparation design, and aesthetic demands.
