Dr. Andre du Plessis is one of our very experienced sedationists and he helps us to treat patients who are scared of the dentist or need big treatments or operations.
After gaining his BMedSci degree from the University of Pretoria, Andre went on to complete his MBChB at the same institution. Following a year in the gold mines in SA, he travelled extensively over the following 7 years, practicing medicine in Canada and Greece. This included a couple of years sailing the seas as a cruise ship’s surgeon, resident ski resort physician in the Rockies, and working with Inuit communities in the remote Northern Territories of Canada. On his return to South Africa he spent 5 years rotating through departments of Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Orthopaedic surgery, A&E, Obstetrics, Radiology and eventually Anaesthetics. Since his arrival in the UK in 1995, he has involved himself on a full-time basis with the administration of conscious sedation since 1997. He was a founder member of the Society of Conscious Sedation in 1999, and gained his Diploma in Conscious Sedation from the University of Stellenbosch in 2002. Andre has been organising twice yearly sedation symposiums in London since 1999, and functioned as coordinator of the Eastman CPD (University College London) / University of the Western Cape Postgraduate Certificate in Sedation and Pain Management in 2005 – 2013. Since 2011 he has been practising full-time procedural sedation as a founder partner in Sedation Solutions. His other passion is photography, for which he was awarded a Fellowship by the Royal Photographic Society in 2015.
