Case Study: Composite filling to replace decayed tooth

This patient came to us complaining of food trap – a common sign that there may be a cavity in between the teeth. Although very extensive, we restored the tooth with a simple white filling.

How do Fillings work?

Step 1: Isolate to tooth

Before removing amalgam, the dentist isolates the tooth with rubber dam. This way, no amalgam particles/dust will go in the patient’s mouth – safety first.

Step 2: Cleaning the tooth

All decay and old filling material are removed. In this case, the proximity of the damage to the dental nerve requires even greater precision to avoid root canal treatment.

Step 3: Layering the composite

The cavity is then filled with composite resin, reconstructing the
original anatomy of the tooth.

Step 4: Checking the bite

Usually dentists slightly overfill the cavity and then adjust the filling in order to fit perfectly on the patient’s bite. Expertise and time is required to ensure the restoration will be
comfortable for the patient.
