Abdurahman El-Awa (Abs) is a Consultant in Oral Surgery with extensive experience. He is renowned for his calm and patient chairside manner.  His areas of interest include; implant dentistry, alveolar bone regeneration and bone grafting, sinus bone grafting, complicated dental extractions, apicectomies and endodontic surgeries, benign soft and hard tissue pathology, jaw bone cysts and intra-oral salivary gland surgery.

Abs qualified in 2003 in Cairo and moved to the UK in 2006 to embark upon specialist training in Oral Surgery. Since then he has trained in Glasgow University Hospitals, Sheffield Dental School, Sheffield University Hospitals and Royal Derby Hospitals. He has completed postgraduate specialist training in Oral Surgery in the UK. He is a member of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh and England and he trains and examines oral surgery specialist trainees. Abs worked as a Consultant Oral Surgeon at Manchester Teaching Hospitals and currently is a Consultant at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the University of Sheffield where he teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate dentists and dental students.

In his spare time Abs enjoys trail running/hiking, fishing and scuba diving.

Foundation dentists

  • I participate in the teaching on the induction program for the maxillofacial foundation dentists.

Dental Sedation Teaching Group & SAAD

  • I am also an approved mentor for dental conscious sedation involved one-to-one teaching and mentoring the general dental practitioners over conscious sedation provision in dental practice.

Examination Experience

  • I am an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Examining the Oral Surgery Specialist exams, and Membership in Oral Surgery.
  • I am an examiner for the University of Sheffield Dental School, undergraduate modules.

Management Experience

  • Clinical Lead for:  Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Maxillofacial Radiology and special care dentistry at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. 2018-2020.

  • I carry out operating under general anesthetic, on various clinical levels and procedures where the dental students are present assisting or observing as part of their oral surgery module.
