Sedationists

The versatility of the anaesthetic or conscious sedation options we can offer at Wimpole Street Dental Clinic, enables even the most complex oral rehabilitation procedure to be both safely and effectively carried out by our dentists and surgeons team, regardless of the likely duration of the treatment conducted within our operating theatre.

Patients who may experience significant nerves or anxiety or even exhibit dental phobia can rest assured that it is possible to manage these significant barriers to treatment with the use of professionally administered anaesthesia to calm and sedate you effectively and safely enabling you to feel comfortable, confident and indeed relaxed enough for us to proceed with treatment designed to restore your oral health.

What happens during sedation?

The length of sedation appropriate for you depends upon the procedure you are booked in to receive. Please be advised that you will only be considered suitable to receive a sedative once your current condition of general health has been assessed by a member of our team. Please also note that a recovery period of 20 to 30 minutes must be respected before you are discharged post-treatment from our dental clinic. For your peace of mind, we would also state that within 24 hours, most dental patients consider themselves well enough to return to resuming their normal daily activities.

What is sedation?

Here, we outline the three different levels of sedation recognised in the U.K. which can help you access the dental treatment you really need. They include:

  • Minimal sedation (or Anxiolysis): This is often referred to as changing your mood. In this state, you feel calm, you are responsive to verbal commands and you are also unconcerned about the forthcoming procedure.
  • Moderate sedation or conscious sedation: This is where you’re more deeply sedated, you become drowsy and sleepy (and may even sleep intermittently), you are still responsive to verbal commands, and yet you feel calm.
  • Deep sedation: At this level of sedation, you may become unconscious. This level is not allowed in the U.K. for sedation outside the operating room.

We achieve the required level of conscious sedation by way of with intravenous agents such as benzodiazepines, opiates, other sedative/anaesthetics, which are usually administered into a vein, or by way of an inhalation agent such as nitrous oxide. A member of the sedationist team is present when sedation is administered to monitor the patient’s vital signs and can act as the patient safety custodian during the dental treatment. Rest assured that all necessary precautions are always undertaken during every use of conscious sedation as standard, here in clinic.

Our sedationist team

To respect both the various levels of sedation available for use and the level of professional responsibility which attends their clinical usage, it makes perfect sense to rely on trusted, eminent anaesthetic professionals to support us during the delivery of dental treatments and surgeries. We are delighted to have both Dr. Andre du Plessis and Dr. Etienne Deysel lead our sedationist best practice here at Wimpole Street Dental Clinic, in central London.

Our sedationist team fully prescribes and commits to our ethos of setting a new standard in modern dentistry and of establishing a centre of excellence here too. Their work to calm and sedate our dental patient community enables our dentists and surgeons to enjoy the clinical freedom to try to innovate new methods or devise new techniques to resolve both straightforward and complex dental issues which may need more time within the operating theatre to give them the best chance of achieving the desired level of clinical success.
